Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Annual Celebration established to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Americans celebrated the first official Martin Luther King Day, which is the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American, on Monday, January 20, 1986.

The initial idea of the Cultural Arts Society of Fuquay-Varina (CASF-V), a 501(c)(3) organization, was formed in 2003 to create a way for the community to honor Dr. King. By 2004, the idea had come to fruition! The CASF-V has since worked tirelessly to celebrate the the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This celebration has been hosted by a number of local churches in the Fuquay-Varina community and even moved to a virtual format during COVID to keep the vision of this event alive during unprecedentedly dark days. This event is great for young and old alike — it has traditionally started with a march through town, ending at a local church for breakfast and a service full of music and readings. In 2024, the march will start at Falcon Park and make its way to First Baptist Church for an indoor celebration. Please plan to join us!

Fuquay-Varina citizenry reflects the microcosm of the world stage. Embracing this diversity provides opportunities for all of us to experience our neighbors in different ways. As a result of these experiences, we become more knowledgeable and comfortable interacting with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures. Fuquay-Varina can become stronger, more respectful of our differences, and more able to see the commonalities among us.

“Fuquay-Varina Around the World: An International Cultural Festival” enjoyed its inaugural event on April 27, 2019, and hosted an ambitious schedule of performances by groups representing different ethnic groups, writers of different genres, artists depicting different life experiences, and an assortment of international foods through our invited food trucks. It was a technical success and we are excited to add this event to our annual calendar.

The 4th Annual International Cultural Festival will take place on September 14, 2024 at the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center. Watch our Facebook page for updates! Anyone interested in helping can contact lynanne.fowle@casf-v.org.
